Redneck Olympics

Stay Brite

What began with two rock-climbing brothers scrambling to earn some money has evolved into the local refrigeration, restaurant equipment-repair and window-cleaning company Stay Brite.
“I was a punk kid in need of some cash,” Nick Messick said about the brothers’ motive to start Stay Brite.
Five years ago, Nick and Alex Messick bought some squeegees and sponges and started cleaning windows for local businesses. For them it was not an expensive investment, since they already owned all the necessary climbing gear to reach some of Helena’s most hard-to-get to windows.
The brothers are now responsible for the windows in some of Helena’s tallest buildings. Among them are the Power Block, Securities Building and multiple buildings in the Great Northern Town Center.
“I guess there is a difference between hanging from a rope and reaching out a bucket,” said Shane Short, who came from Bad Axe, Mich., to work with the brothers. Short is not fond of heights and thought his experience working in cranes would prepare him. He says it didn’t.
Looking to the future, Nick would like to steer the company toward more restaurant equipment repair, specifically coffee equipment. Recently, Nick just got back from training in Long Beach, Calif., and Las Vegas for work with corporate clients like McDonald’s. Stay Brite now has a contract for equipment repair for the Subways and McDonald’s in Helena, on a 24/7 on-call basis.
“Being scared of heights,” Nick said, “is not as scary as not paying your bills.”
